That's the DEM file that originally shipped with iGO8.0 on the Uniden GPS units (And others probably) with Sensis R15
All of the more recent DEM files for Australia have gotten smaller and more general. The main reason for the size difference is simply the level of exact detail.
Think of a dem file as a grid reference of altitude points. NASA used the Space Shuttle topography mission to map the *entire* world by elevation (DEM). they subsequently released it as '1 second' and '3 second' dem data sets. The 'seconds' being seconds of degrees of latitude/longitude between data points. So the 1 second DEM had 9 times more data than the 3 second dem.
So the newer Oceania dem files contain *much* less detail and small elevation irregularities will not show up. *Unless* they use specific, non-regular elevation points and a smoothing algorithm to *restore* missing data. I doubt they do this as it would use enormous amounts of RAM for the reconstructed data and equal amounts of CPU time.
Now the .DEM file extension is used by ESRI Arcview for its 'Digital Elevation Model' files. I don't know if they are the same filetype, but As I can access ArcView at work I will check tomorrow.
