Are these distributed freely from HTC/Microsoft or are they Warez? How do you do it, is there a program you run that just does it? Could it brick my phone?

And what about Ubuntu?

well strictly speaking ROMs cannot be considered warez, and no they are not HTC/Microsoft certified, see some people are not satisfied with the oem roms, so they cook their owm roms, also wm 6.5 is not released and nor is an official upgrade available for a majority of devices, but we want wm 6.5 on our devices so thats where the cookers come into play.and yes you can brick your phone, instantly void your warranty/guarantee, you need to hard spl your phone before flashing etc. need any help or step by step instruction pls post here or alternatively pm me.

If someone has WM 6.1, is it (legally) free to goto WM 6.5?

Like going from XP to Vista, you have to buy a license for Vista, but from going to XP to XP SP1 is a free update.

no it is a "Cooked ROM" its not like xp to vista see as i had explained to you earlier that flashing a new rom means you void your warranty / guarantee, that means tha Microsoft/HTC would like you to be "legally" stuck at WM 6.1, and if you need / want WM 6.5 then you purchase a newer device and fill up their coffers. so you see first you gotta use hard spl that will enable your device to acccept a cooked ROM, otherwise the smart fellows at Microsoft/HTC have put a invisible lock on your phone in the sense that your device will not accept a non OEM ROM. Hope that clarifies and as usual any further questions you can post here or PM me.

Wouldn't it be like XP to Vista because you have to pay?

That's horrible they want you to buy a new phone, I like to make use of older devices and not just throw them away.

sad but true, cause i donot think htc diamond is upgradable to wm 6.5 officially, so if you dont know about cooked roms, you will have to buy a new device which will have 6.5. thats the way they operate white collared crooks.

So to use cooked ROMs you hard spl? So to hard spl do you just run a program?

Do you recommend I do this, should I wait for my warranty to expire? WM 6.1 does what I need it to do...

Yes to run Hard SPL is to run a program, it is to be run on your PC when your phone is connected to the PC via activesync, and to answer your second question "should I wait for my warranty to expire? WM 6.1" well that depends upon you, i mean you got to take a decesion, weather to flash a new ROM or not? let me also tell you that flashing a new ROM is always fraught with risks, do it when you are comfortable and sure of what you are doing, hope that helps. Thanks
